Chief Secretary of Sikkim visits ICAR-NOFRI
Chief Secretary of Sikkim, Shri Alok Kumar Shrivastava, IAS, visited ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute (NOFRI), Tadong, Gangtok on 22.01.2019 to interact with Scientists and other staff of the institute. In the beginning Joint Director, Dr. R.K. Avasthe briefed him about the various ongoing research and extension activities. He visited the Research Farm of ICAR-NOFRI and held detailed discussions with various Scientists. He visited all the sections of the animal sciences and was briefed about different research programmes of goatery, poultry, dairy and piggery units. He showed great interest in organic crop production research trials undergoing at NOFRI and was also detailed about various climate resilient technologies developed. He visited the micro processing unit for turmeric and ginger powder extraction and appreciated that organic products are being produced at the farm. Joint Director also briefed him about various horticultural research programmes undergoing and also demonstrated the year round vegetable production in low cost poly tunnels and low cost rain shelters and kiwi production technology for organic conditions. Later he visited the agroforestry section and was informed about the ongoing research activities in the development of profitable integrated organic farming system model in the context of Sikkim. He also visited vermicompost and manure production units of the Institute and showed satisfaction over the work being undertaken to address various issues pertaining to organic manure availability in the state. Later Vanaraja backyard poultry day old chicks were distributed the Chief Secretary to farmers of Sikkim.
He expressed satisfaction and lauded the Scientists for doing commendable work for the betterment of farming community of Sikkim. He appreciated the efforts put in by the ICAR-NOFRI team for the research work being carried and also congratulated them for their hard work and tremendous efforts towards development of organic agriculture in the state.
